Our Documentary Film Shows Hope for Cleveland Human Trafficking Survivors
In honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Thespis Media is sharing the story of an amazing woman in Northeast Ohio. Cultivating a community of hope, Renee Jones welcomes victims of human trafficking with open arms, into her Empowerment Center.
When a friend approached me to make a video for Renee, I was intrigued. I had heard about this topic but I was not well informed, other than seeing the growing number of posters in public with reference to human trafficking. Coincidently, Byron and I were looking for someone to feature for a short documentary film. After trading a few emails, we booked the shoot with Renee Jones and I eagerly went into production mode. When we arrived at the Renee Jones Empowerment Center, I was greeted with the most welcoming energy you can imagine. We set up our equipment and I pulled out my notebook full of questions. Renee was so full of passion and commitment to her organization, that our conversation easily went into powerfully poignant territory. A few minutes into our chat, I wasn’t even paying attention to my prep questions.
She was captivating and honest. Very rarely have I felt the outpouring spirit of love and compassion from another human being… other than my mother. This woman was a complete stranger earlier that evening, but within minutes she had touched my heart deeply. We even had to stop for a few minutes because I was sniffling! Tears poured down my cheeks. Her story was gripping...
This is the story of Renee Jones and the organization she created to rebuild broken spirits, build strong healthy self esteem, and enrich the lives of adults and children in the community. We completed Empowerment is the Key in 2014 and it played at the annual gala fundraiser for the organization. It was also a part of Story & Heart’s Storytelling Parade in 2014. We’ve now released it on vimeo for the wider audience. We hope you take a few minutes to experience the gift that the Renee Jones Empowerment Center has given to the greater Cleveland community.
